Basil Beef

Basil Beef — tender beef prepared in traditional Filipino style with local seasonings. A hearty and satisfying main dish.

Ingredients

  • 0.7 kg (1.5 lbs) ground beef
  • 10 piece fresh basil leaves (holy basil)
  • 2.5 tbsp fish sauce
  • 2 tsp chili flakes
  • 2 tbsp minced garlic
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 1.5 tsp ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Heat a frying pan.

  2. Pour the oil in the frying pan.

  3. When the oil becomes hot, sauté the garlic.

  4. Fold in the chili flakes and then cook for 15 seconds.

  5. Put-in the ground beef. Stir and brown for about 10 minutes.

  6. Add the fish sauce and brown sugar. Stir. Simmer for 20 minutes while letting the excess liquid evaporate.

  7. Put-in the basil leaves. Cook for 5 minutes.

  8. Sprinkle the ground black pepper. Stir

  9. Turn-off heat. Transfer to a serving plate. Add fried egg on top if desired.

  10. Serve.
