Pro Tips

**Chef's Tips & Troubleshooting:**

- Let the oven fully preheat before putting the dish in for consistent cooking.

- Use a meat thermometer to check doneness rather than relying on cooking time alone.

- Cook pasta in generously salted boiling water — it should taste seasoned on its own.

- For baked international dishes, preheat the oven fully before putting the dish in.

Cooking Tips

For the most tender results, cook low and slow — a gentle simmer (not a vigorous boil) breaks down connective tissue without drying out the meat. Taste and adjust seasoning toward the end of cooking. As liquids reduce, flavors concentrate, so what tastes balanced early may become too salty later. Check liquid levels halfway through cooking and add hot water or broth if needed. Long-cooked dishes can dry out or burn if left unattended.

Ingredient Substitutions

Short on time? A pressure cooker (Instant Pot) can reduce cooking time by roughly half for most braised and stewed Filipino dishes. Reduce liquid slightly since less evaporates.

Storage & Reheating

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days. The flavors often deepen overnight, making leftovers even more delicious. Reheat on the stovetop over medium-low heat, adding a splash of water or broth if the sauce has thickened during storage. Microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring between each.

Prep: 25 min Cook: 65 min Total: 90 min Medium Serves 4

Instructions

  1. Soak the lasagna in hot water for 25 minutes. Drain the water and set the lasagna aside.
  2. Heat olive oil in a cooking pot. Add the ground beef and sauté until browned.
  3. Add the garlic and onion, then sauté until the onion softens.
  4. Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, chicken broth, and Italian seasoning. Stir well and simmer for 20 minutes while occasionally stirring.
  5. Add the tomato paste, basil, and half of the parsley. Continue to simmer for 10 minutes while stirring occasionally.
  6. Add seasoning of with salt, ground black pepper, and 2 tablespoons of Parmesan cheese. Set aside.
  7. Make the white sauce by combining the ricotta cheese and egg in a mixing bowl. Mix until smooth, then set aside.
  8. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  9. Arrange the lasagna in a baking pan by spreading a small amount of meat sauce at the bottom. Lay the lasagna over the sauce and top it with a good amount of meat sauce followed by a layer of white sauce. Spread mozzarella and Parmesan cheese over it. Repeat this step one more time to create 2 layers.
  10. Finish by arranging the third layer of lasagna and topping it with meat sauce. Sprinkle the remaining parsley along with a generous amount of mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses.
  11. Bake for 30 minutes.
  12. Remove from the oven and let it cool down before serving. Serve hot.
