Pro Tips

**Chef's Tips & Troubleshooting:**

- Make sure the pan and oil are hot before adding ingredients for the best sear.

- Fry in batches to avoid overcrowding — lowering the temperature makes food greasy.

- Blot the pork surface dry with paper towels before frying to ensure a crackling-crisp skin.

- Taste the pork broth and adjust seasoning with fish sauce or salt just before serving.

Cooking Tips

Pat the meat completely dry with paper towels before frying — moisture is the enemy of crispiness. Use a thermometer to maintain oil temperature at 350–375°F (175–190°C). If the oil is too cool, the food absorbs grease; too hot and it burns on the outside before cooking through.

Ingredient Substitutions

Pork alternatives: Chicken thighs work well in most pork recipes (they stay moist like pork does). For a leaner option, use turkey breast or firm tofu. Short on time? A pressure cooker (Instant Pot) can reduce cooking time by roughly half for most braised and stewed Filipino dishes. Reduce liquid slightly since less evaporates.

Storage & Reheating

Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 days. The flavors often deepen overnight, making leftovers even more delicious. Crispy dishes are best enjoyed fresh — they lose their crunch when stored. If you must store leftovers, reheat in an air fryer or oven at 375°F (190°C) for 5–7 minutes to restore crispiness. Avoid microwaving crispy dishes — the steam makes the coating soggy. Use a toaster oven or stovetop skillet instead. Reheat on the stovetop over medium-low heat, adding a splash of water or broth if the sauce has thickened during storage. Microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring between each.

Crispy Cabbage Rolls

Crispy cabbage rolls deep-fried until golden and crunchy — a Filipino favorite with a satisfying crackle.

Prep: 15 min Cook: 35 min Total: 50 min Medium Serves 4

Instructions

  1. Boil 4 cups of water in a cooking pot. Add 1 teaspoon salt.
  2. Put the Napa cabbage in the pot. Boil for 1 minute. Pour cold water in a large bowl. Remove the cabbage from the pot and submerge it into the cold water until it cools-down. Remove and dry the cabbage. Set aside.
  3. Cook the meat filling by heating 3 tablespoons of cooking oil in a pan. Sauté the garlic until it starts to brown. Add onion. Cook until the onion softens. Add the ground pork and continue cooking while stirring until the pork turns light brown. Add Knorr Pork Cube and then cook for 2 minutes. Season with salt and ground black pepper. Transfer to a large bowl. Let it cool down.
  4. Add minced carrot, minced green onion, egg, all-purpose flour, soy sauce, and sesame oil. Mix well.
  5. Scoop 3 tablespoons of the meat mixture and arrange it over a piece of Napa cabbage. Secure the filling by folding both sided of the cabbage inwards and roll until the filling is completely covered. Secure by inserting a toothpick into the cabbage roll.
  6. Start to fry the cabbage rolls by heating cooking oil in a pan. Meanwhile, dredge the cabbage roll in all-purpose flour, dip in beaten egg, and dredge in panko breadcrumbs until completely coated. Fry one side until it turns golden brown. Turn it over and do the same on the opposite side. Remove from the pan place over a plate lined with paper towel or on a wire rack. Let it cool down.
  7. Slice the cabbage rolls into bite-sized pieces. Serve with your favorite dipping sauce.
